Gym
I signed up for the gym. I started going on the 21st March 2014 and I went 2 times a week. Here are some photos taken at the gym:
I started going to become fitter for the Race for Life (which I also did for Action). I did some practice runs before, but I realised how unhealthy I was, and if I was going to walk/run through Cambridge for several hours, I needed to become much fitter.
Before signing up for a gym membership, I met with a trainer at the gym who showed me how to use all the equipment. At first, I wasn't very good at using some of the equipment. I had never joined a gym before, so this was a new and unfamiliar challenge for me. For example, rowing machines are much more difficult than they seem, and the trainer pointed out several mistakes in how hard I was pulling, my posture, and told me I should be using my legs to help me row, which is something I hadn't realised. My use of gym equipment was something I really needed to improve on if I was going to become fitter before July.
One issue I had was that I wasn't very motivated sometimes. My goal was to go at least once a week, or twice if I had time. However, being so busy with schoolwork, and being quite unfit meant that it was hard to motivate myself to go. But I reminded myself that I had to become fitter and I really wanted to become healthier, which meant that I persevered and didn't give up on going.
Another problem was that I didn't realise the importance of stretching beforehand and afterwards. I ending up pulling a muscle in my leg which meant I was in a lot of pain. I learnt a lot about the importance of health and safety when exercising, which was a very important lesson for me.
I'm very glad I went to the gym because I noticed a serious improvement in my fitness. I started lifting heavier weights and I could run faster for longer on the treadmill without being too out of breath. I knew I wasn't very healthy, but I didn't realise how much I needed to improve until now. This has been a great experience for me.
