Sixth Form Open Evening
Parkside Sixth had an open evening on the 4th November which I helped with.
From 2pm until 5pm I helped setting up and tidied up in preparation for the open evening.
From 6pm til 8.30pm I guided prospective students and parents around the school and then helped at the stall for Film Studies.
While touring prospective students, I explained what the IB was in more detail, and answered their questions on how much work we get, what the Extended Essay was, and what CAS is. I find it difficult sometimes to explain things and present clearly, but I wanted to be clear and present well in order to convince them to come to Parkside.
Later, when helping at the stall for Film Studies, I talked about what type of practical film-making we do, and what kinds of films we analyse in class. Film is quite a niche subject, so trying to convince students to choose it was tricky. Many think that Film Studies is just watching and discussing films, but I wanted to change people's negative attitude towards the study of Film, and more widely, the study of Arts subjects in general. It felt very rewarding to be able to challenge negative perceptions of the topic and convincing parents that Arts subjects were not an easy subject like they believed.
Below is the cover of a small booklet for prospective students that we handed out.
